US 70 up for improvement: Biggs proposes beautifying highway ...

If a list of landscaping proposals from the town manager wins the Town Councils approval, the U.S. 70 corridor could get a little greener.

Town Manager Steve Biggs submitted a memorandum to the council at its April 2 meeting detailing opportunities to beautify public right-of-way areas along U.S. 70. The list is the result of a goal established in the councils work plan for 2006-08.

The proposal identifies 17 locations for tree planting and other landscaping along U.S. 70 between the Wal-Mart/Grand Plaza development to the west and Southern Village to the east.

According to the memo, the proposed improvements would reflect a substantial commitment of funding for installation and maintenance. The plan would require a number of phases and priorities must be established.

Biggs said that the council will be able to select only some of the recommendations for the 2007-08 fiscal year due to budget constraints.
